THE AVAILABLE OPPORTUNITIES

Shops: Skill Acquisition Training Centre

Delta State SOMATECH will has both a machine shop and a woodworking shop, where students can build and modify models and machine parts.

The various consultancy, recertification and skill acquisition training programmes shall be Co-coordinated by a Co-ordinator.

Delta State SOMATECH's information technology is sophisticated and accessible. Students are required to purchase a laptop and selected software through the school. Delta State SOMATECH will provides a wireless network that covers all dormitory, classrooms and laboratory areas. The Couch Computer Laboratory is available 24/7 and has atleast 5 PC's and workstations. Printing will be available in each classroom, library, computer laboratory which includes large format plotting. Among the software that will be available are finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics and naval architecture programs.

In addition, Delta State SOMATECH's Local Area Network (LAN) offers wireless service – providing access all over campus. All students, HOD's, and staff have email accounts and unlimited internet access.

In teaching both theory and practice, Delta State SOMATECH will offers an array of state-of-the-art labs designed specifically to help students explore and master naval architecture and marine technology. Among the facilities:

The chemistry lab, which contains equipment for performing inorganic chemistry experiments and the examination of technology materials The physics lab, where students conduct experiments involving heat, sound, and light; the lab offers a range of equipment including thermal expansion apparatus, spectroscopes, and optical benches. The materials science lab, where students examine and test metals, is equipped with metallurgical microscopes, heat-treating furnaces, hardness testing machines, and other machines. The marine technology and mechanical lab, where students test performance, is equipped with a turbocharged diesel engine, a turbogenerator, and other apparatuses. The material testing and structural lab, which offers a range of equipment, including a 200,000-pound Baldwin-Southwark tension compression machine, electrical strain gauge instrumentation, and other units. The electrical lab, which offers instrumentation to measure resistance, capacitance, inductance, current, voltage, and power; it also includes motors, generators, transformers, and other equipment. The fluids lab, which has a small wind tunnel, electrolytic tank, and an oscillating table that simulates ship motions. The ship model towing tank and instrumentation room, which is used for both course work and student research; it enables students to tow ship models and test resistance and test model propellers - with the wavemaker simulating lively seas.
