FAMILIARIZATION TOUR OF THE RECTOR TO VARIOUS SCHOOLS AT DELTA POLY
After playing host to the accreditation team of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the newly appointed Rector of the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Ogujor, held an interactive session with the staff of the institution when he visited the various schools and departments In the Polytechnic on 12th and 13th April, 2917.
The Rector who assumed duty on March 29, 2017 visited the various departments in order to have firsthand information on the running of the departments and the challenges faced by staff in the course of performing their duties.
At the various schools visited, namely School of Business and Management Studies, School of Engineering, School of Applied Sciences and Technology and the School of General Studies, the Deans, Heads of Department, Directors and their staff were on hand to warmly welcome the Rector while congratulating him for his appointment.
In their addresses, the Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments/Units highlighted the prospects and challenges of the different departments/units and called on the Rector to come up with measures that would enhance teaching and learning and staff motivation for improved productivity. Some of the challenges listed include lack of office accommodation, irregular power supply, lack of running water and consumables in laboratories for practicals, lack of furniture, lack of equipments in the laboratories, inadequate workshops, power shortage, porous security, lack of functional computers among others.
Responding, the Rector thanked the staff for the warm reception accorded him and said he is at the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara to contribute his quota towards the growth and academic development of the institution and promised that he will work assiduously to ensure that the mission and vision of the polytechnic namely, “to be the centre of Excellence in Computing and Information Technology” is realized. The Rector said he would bring his wealth of experience as professor of Engineering with specialization on Power and Machines to transform the engineering departments to a world-class standard were the students would obtain the requisite knowledge and skills that would make them compete favourably with any graduate of established institutions both in and outside Nigeria.
The Rector further noted that the concept of polytechnic Education is to produce manpower with technical skills that would help drive the manufacturing industry. Consequently, Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Ogujor promised to establish a vehicle maintenance workshop and paint production which was identified at SLT department.
TO boost the internally generated revenue(IGR) of the polytechnic, the Rector promised to improve the facilities of the Entreprenurial centre in order to produce table water and bread and industrial starch.
He also promised to work closely with the consultancy unit to come up with innovations and ideas that would enhance the revenue of the polytechnic.
On staff training and development, the Rector promised to send staff on Seminars and workshops and to liaise with relevant Government Agencies like TETFUND for Training Grants and Scholarships.
The Rector also promised to improve on staff welfare by providing recreational facility like Staff Club where staff can go and unwind after the day's job. This is also an NBTE's requirement.
The Rector equally assured the staff that his administration would provide a conducive office accommodation for staff to comfortably do their work.
On transportation, Engr. Prof. Emmanuel Ogujor promised to provide additional two shuttle buses to bring down the high fare charged by private bus operatives.
The Rector call on all staff to be diligent in their duties and shun acts capable of bringing the school to disrepute., He said staff misconduct would no longer be tolerated as erring staff would be sanctioned after due process have been followed. He specifically called on lecturers not to trade marks for money and avoid compelling students to buy textbooks.
